FDA Clears Clarius OB AI for Handheld Ultrasound: Advancing Prenatal Care

Wednesday, June 26, 2024

Clarius Mobile Health has achieved FDA clearance for its Clarius OB AI fetal biometric measurement tool, enhancing access to obstetrical (OB) prenatal monitoring and care in resource-limited areas.

This tool utilizes state-of-the-art deep learning models developed from over 30,000 de-identified fetal ultrasound images to automatically estimate fetal age, weight, and growth intervals.

The Clarius C3 HD3 wireless handheld ultrasound scanner, now available in the United States and Canada, incorporates the OB AI tool.

This advancement allows midwives and nurses, including those without prior scanning experience, to perform accurate fetal ultrasound measurements independently.

Feedback from practitioners such as Carolyn L. Gegor, an ARDMS certified midwife sonographer, highlights the tool's efficacy in improving measurement accuracy and facilitating learning among students.

Globally, two-thirds of women lack access to prenatal ultrasound, revealing significant gaps in maternal and fetal health monitoring.

Traditional ultrasound equipment's high costs, lack of portability, and extensive training requirements further limit adoption by midwives and nurses.

Clarius addresses these challenges by integrating AI with affordable, specialized ultrasound technology to expand access and improve health outcomes for mothers and babies.

The company's commitment to innovation in handheld ultrasound. By making high-quality ultrasound technology more accessible and user-friendly, Clarius supports clinicians in delivering precise and efficient prenatal assessments.

OB AI is included with Clarius membership and seamlessly integrates with the Clarius app during abdominal scans, automatically identifying key fetal anatomy, placing calipers for measurements, and recording data directly into electronic patient records.

To further support midwives, Clarius is hosting a practical webinar on July 23 led by Carolyn Gegor, focusing on the role of first-trimester point-of-care ultrasound in early pregnancy care.

This initiative underscores Clarius' dedication to empowering healthcare professionals through education and advanced technology.
